In the Tromso Polar museum

Because the Tromso is located at the warm gulf stream, the port stays alwyas open even in the coldest winster. That's why North Pole expeditions use(d) this town as their startingpoint. The Polar museum gives a nice overview about the history of polar exploration (including Willem Bartentz - who was the first to discover Spitsbergen in trying to reach "the East" via a Northern route).and Admundsen.

The Transformers rock

The new Transformers is very entertaining. Much more fun then Terminator. We saw it in Alta in a (almost empty) full digital theater and it is a great special FX extravaganza! Although the keep on mixing up a lot of locations. .. I especially liked the transformation of Tyrese Gibson as USAF Tech Sergeant Epps ;-))

The invation of the King Crabs

First introduced to the Barents Sea off northern Russia in the 1960s, red king crabs are now spilling down western Norway by the millions. Some fear these massive crabs, native to Alaskan seas and the North Pacific, could reach as far south as Spain and Portugal, devouring almost everything in their path. At the nordkapp it is offered as a tasteful starter.

Why are cyclists so lonely?

On our way to (and back) to the Nordkapp we noticed a striking difference between cyclists and motorbikers. All the cyclists are loners - struggling against the (sometimes severe) weather and road conditions and all motorbikers are driving in groups... So is it that cyclists are driving to proof somethng to themselves and that on a motorbike you just have fun? ;-))

Cruise ships all around

Honnigvag is a popular port for cruise ships to make a short stop (and see the midnight sun). Some of the ships are almost bigger then the whole village all together. Like this Celebrity Century ship (coming by the way from Amsterdam)

Finally: the Nordkapp

After 4.000 km, Denmark, Sweden, Finland and Norway - we have reached our far northern point: The Nordkapp. We take a day rest now and then head back south along the coast of Norway. The weather was great and not a lot of people were there.

The Garmin Zumo Artic Circle GPS bug

08:39 mareku 0 Comments

When we crossed the Artic Circle something very strange happened to both our Zumo navigation systems: the brightness of the screen was reduced to 0% (and so the screen unreadable). What ever we did it just popped back to 0% every time. Because we both had the problem, we knew it was something with the software and it is: it seems that above the Artic Circle the Garmin Zumo has a bug. I could download an fix for Eddie's Zumo, but because I have a Honda OEM version - I still have this issue... :-(

Old rock carvings at Alta

In Alta you can see pre historic rock carvings. Strangely enough Eddie and I discovered that the ancient civilizations already had the latest Apple computer keyboards. Just view closely the first picture right above corner...
Alta by the way is made big by Dutch Whalers who set up their Bossekop (Boskoop?) district. Still an Alta area is called Bossekop.

Sunday's Best: Top Ten Michael Jackson Tracks

10:08 mareku 0 Comments

Well, now we know that Michael is dead, I guess we have to make up the score about his legacy. Actually there are less songs then you would think. The best work I think is made with Quincy Jones and Rod Temperton. It is Quincy who made Michael to the King of Pop. Here are my favorite tracks:
1. Billie Jean
2. Baby be Mine
3. Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough
4. Rock with You
5. Off The Wall
6. Remember The Time
7. Blame It On The Boogie
8. Thriller
9. Ben
10. Smooth Criminal

Reindeer on the road

On the E45 and about you will see a lot of wildlife, like this reindeer e.g. and Moose or even bear. Because it is a hustle on the motor bike to take of your gloves, try to find your camera and shoot the picture, this is the only decent shot I got

Time difference

When you cross the Swedish - Finish border the time is one hour later. Very strange because you move north and it only lasts for 50km or so because then the Norwegian (CE) time starts to kick in again. Strangely enough all the shops, restaurants etc. are running the Finnish time - so dinner and breakfast e.g. feels like very early.

Crocs mania

The Swedes like their clogs, but they like their Crocs even better. I have never seen so many people walking on so ugly shoes before - EVERYBODY is wearing them...
