Orlando Cruz: first openly gay man in boxing

You better make love to him :-)

How to be a heartbreaker?

What will you buy at the James Bond Auction?

A 1/3 scale Aston Martin DB5 used in Skyfall $50.000

Set of four Thunderball posters $10.000

Snooper Dog robot from A View To A Kill $7.500
A pair of swimming trunks by La Perla, worn by Daniel Craig as James Bond in Casino Royale $5.000
I take the swimming trunks - $5.000 is a steal.

Adidas Adipure Gazelle

Because I ran my first half marathon today - I though it was a good idea to reward myself and buy (yet another) new pair of running shoes. Staying in the natural minimalist running footwear I choose the Adipur Gazelle shoes - who according to all the reviews should be perfect... Wow! they look very minimalistic don't they?

Hmmm...

The strange case of the disappearing women

In the Saudi Arabian version of the new IKEA catalog all the women are erased. It is actually a very well Photoshop exercise - but rather strange to get rid of half the population like that...

The CEO as Performer

-->
Tim Cook
Thorsten Heinz
Stephen Elop
Steve Ballmer

Since Steve Jobs every (tech)CEO has to introduce his new gadgets with a show and with him- or herself as the leading actor. As we all know Steve did a amazing job. (very well choreographed and rehearsed and directed by some of the best directors)
The book “The Presentation Secrets of Steve Jobs” is a must read when ever you want to present for a large audience.

Unfortunately not every CEO has read this book. The latest introductions were prove of the fact that performing is something else then being a good CEO. Tim Cook (Apple) just seems to use the old Steve Jobs scripts and clothes, but without the same passion and charisma. Stephen Elop (Nokia) needs definitely some fashion advise but isn’t all that bad as a presenter. Steve Ballmer (Microsoft) is so happy with himself that he forgets his audience and sometimes just act stupid.
Thorsten Heinz (RIM) is dressed terribly (tuck in your belly Thorsten…) and very, very boring – he keeps on going on about details and other not important stuff. He is probably the worst of the current CEO’s not so bad as  Carly Fiorina (former CEO HP) was a couple of years ago…

By the way if you look at the registration of the various speeches you will find huge quality differences in direction, camera standpoints, lighting and setting. Again Apple is doing by far the best job here.

If all the CEO’s were like Bill Clinton I am sure that consumers would buy their stuff more and that the economic crisis would be gone in a heartbeat.

The day I stopped messing with potatoes

As almost everyone I used to mash my mashed potatoes until today that is because now I am pressing them with a Rösle potato ricer. The result is a complete different experience: fluffy creamy like potato mousse :-) My recipe: take special mashed potato sort (like Ceasar), steam them for 10 minutes, press, add hot milk, dash of salt & pepper, sharp mustard, some butter and some fresh herbs (like coriander or parsley).

The day I ran the Dam-2-Dam

Here with Tomas just for the start. The weather was great and we ran with more then 50.000 people from Amsterdam to Zaandam. While running you almost feel like a real athlete because along the way hundreds of people are standing, singing and dancing to encourage you - it is actually not a run at all - it is a party :-)

Alexander McCall Smith: an Edinburgh walking tour

A nice video about the 44 Scotland Street series which play in New Town Edinburgh.

RFID socks?

Blacksocks have created the worlds' first smart socks with RFID buttons so that you cannot lose them in your laundry - $189 a pair. I think I just keep on searching for mine in the laundry basket or ask Eddie to find a matching pair...

Hi there!

The Story of Film - An Odyssey

I am totally fascinated by the 15(!) part documentary "The Story of Film" by Mark Cousins. It takes a little bit to get used to his particular way of pronouncing (Scottish) but when you are in his quest you are definitely in.  I have learned all kind of things I didn't know - or which I took for granted and his comparison between original ideas and "quotes" in movies is just stunning. It is a masterpiece on it's own with (amazingly restored) fragments of classics like Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari, Battleship Potemkin and Nyobo Funshitsu.

No more runs (this week)

Just to save myself for the 16K dam-2-dam run next Sunday ;-)

Holy mackerel! - a new fresh find

I love mackerel (from the Dutch " makelare" =  broker) - but until now I only ate it mostly smoked or out of a tin with tomato sauce (both very nice). But then I saw fresh mackerel at the fishmonger and thought - why not make a nice starter with that? It was hard to find recipes and to get rid of of the tiny bones - but in the end my creation of mackerel, grapefruit and samphire was perfect...

What?

A colorful dinner with the bank

Amidst wonderful art we had a nice dinner with our bank guys with other art collectors at the Jan van der Togt Museum.

Why I am not thinking about upgrading to iPhone 5

OK it is somewhat thinner and lighter, but for the rest I do not see the big difference between the 4S and the 5. iOS6 is the biggest news. So for now I will continue to use the 4S (with iOS6).

The elections when Europe won

Wow these elections were really exciting to follow: would the populists win again? would the electorate punish Europa for bailing out the southern countries? No we know none of this: The Netherlands continues to be a very stable, European country. In fact the parties who are for more integration of Europe won most. I am still very happy and feel lucky to live here. If only the confidence of the consumers in the near future would go up...

Post stretching

These days I am more stretching then ever before. After running longer distances I noticed that I need to stretch to avoid walking around like a robot the rest of the day. Maybe it is also because of the new Amazon Serial from Neal Pollack that I am reading about this Yoga Detective ;-)

The astonishing short gay marriage of the X-men

June 2012

Sept 2012
A few months after Northstar (a.k.a. Jean-Paul Beaubier) and his boyfriend Kyle Jinadu married in the X-Men comic it seems that they split up already...

My new action man?

The felt dolls of the board books of Cozy Classics are hilarious. Look at Pride and Prejudice or Moby Dick. I don't really think the books will be a huge success - but as soon as the start selling the dolls...

Novation Launchpad

Thinking of Zedd and Madeon I am planning to try out Ableton Live in combination with a Novation Launchpad myself. The only thing is - where to buy it?

The new Mozart is called Zedd

I like the way music is produced now-a-days. While I am still composing with sequencers (like Reason) the new thing is music controllers in combination with loops and samples. Creating completely new music out of existing ones. Madeons' Popculture is a good example (18 years old). But the best I think is Zedd (Anton Zaslavski), 22 years old from Kaiserslautern. Listen to his The Legend of Zelda mix or the awesome Slam The Door and you now why everone want to record with him. Also these guys create their own fame - without record company, without even an album. Just Youtube and Soundcloud and a bit of Beatport. Read this nice article about Zedd in the NYT.

Organized Elections

With the Romney - Obama battle you would almost forget that in The Netherlands we have an election too. These are -as everything- highly regulated and organized. Even the size of the election posters is standardized. And if you look more closely also the colors (red, white, blue, orange, green and purple)

He is waiting for us

We booked our trip to Borneo - cannot wait to see all our relatives in the jungle...

Why did Bieb changed his hair?

And... you would think you could afford some pants that actually fit :-)

Snälla Andreas igen

Exactly how gay are you?

hmmm... I am not sure seeing the guys in this illustration if I want to be in the 6 range... I feel more at ease at #2...

Why would you wear socks in bed?

Maybe he doesn't know himself as well and that's the reason he's staring as he is... (nice color match though...)

Davids' statue

Like a sort real life "Rocky" David Beckham statues are popping up everywhere. It is a new campaign from H&M for his underwear range. Shame only that the real David isn't looking nearly as good anymore as his statue...
