Please make more noise...

Because the Prius makes virtually no noise at slower speeds when it run solely on electric power, blind people say it pose a
hazard to those who rely on their ears to determine whether it's
safe to cross the street or walk through a parking lot.
"I'm used to being able to get sound cues from my environment
and negotiate accordingly. I hadn't imagined there was anything I
really wouldn't be able to hear," said Deborah Kent Stein,
chairwoman of the National Federation of the Blind's Committee on
Automotive and Pedestrian Safety. "We did a test, and I
discovered, to my great dismay, that I couldn't hear it."

Maybe Debbie shoul come over and listen to my Prius in the morning when I try to leave my garage: It is screaming like hell! The rear gear beeps constantly, the parkingsensors roar and the don't forget your safety belt alarm kicks in as well.... The neighbors didn't complain just yet...

Stupid

How stupid can I be? I completely missed the fact that Bill Clinton was signing his new book (At Give) in Rotterdam today. I certainly was willing to stand for hours in line to give the man a hand shake. Yet an other reason that Obama MUST win. If Hilary is president I will never see Bill live...

GI Marque

The BBC will air a new documentary from Stephen Fry: HIV and Me. Part of the series is a website were you can build your own GI Joe.

New Start

Today I started developing further our brand new Zomoto website. In our new office at the Herengracht in Amsterdam I am working hard with Marijn, Jeroen and Steven to bring the website in to its next stage. Our back door neighbors, Ruby and Hans from Skipintro surprised me with a nice bunch of flowers - which just fits in our compact offices... :-)
(the photo quality is thanks to Steven's new phone...)

The last of Hans

Yesterday the special Hans van Manen ballet series already came to an end with an excellent performance in Care theater. The extraordinary ballet "Live" in which a baller dancer is followed live with a video camera was again a big hit. Afterwards I had the chance to thank Hans in person (and to congratulate him with his 75th birthday). I must admit that in real he really looks more like...say...76!

Clive Wearing

In March of 1985, Clive Wearing, an eminent English musician and
musicologist in his mid-forties, was struck by a brain infection—a
herpes encephalitis—affecting especially the parts of his brain
concerned with memory. He was left with a memory span of only
seconds—the most devastating case of amnesia ever recorded. In the New Yorker of this week the extraordinary story about his life. With every blink of his eye, he forgets what he did, where is is etc. Sometimes he is weeks waking up. The only thing he remembers is his wife Deborah. He has been the subject of a couple of documentaries.

Daniel Tammet

Daniel Tammet is an autistic guy with the Savant syndrome. That means that he is incredibly good in languages and mathematics. He can remember

The end of the Telegraaf assignment

Well that's it: Today was my last day of my assignment at The Telegraaf as interim director of Telegraaf Classified Media. A lot happened since my start in May and things will continue to change as TCM will set his new course. To start with they have a new (more appropriate) name: Telegraaf Database Publishing.
It was a very nice period when I look back at it: nice people, ambitious targets and lots of energy. Naturally when operating in a huge organization you will find some positives and some negatives. The latter being trying to get people and staff departments along with your own ideas, to insure that you still have to budget to get things done. My main mantra has been: no matter what Put the Consumer, the visitors to our websites first. I hope that they will remember that and that in a couple of months we see all kinds of new ideas will develop.
What I certainly will NOT miss is the gloomy building and view...

So on monday I will move ahead to the Zomoto headquarters at Herengracht 444, Amsterdam :-)

Reason 4

Move over Halo 3, here's REASON 4!

I just saw that I am a Reason fan (and buyer) since 2001. I made every step the Propellerheads guys from Stockholm. From Reason 1.0, 2.0, 2.5, 3.0 and now 4.0 The software has grown dramaticaly, not only in possibilities, but in sound as well. I was a beta tester but must admit that I got annoyed by receiving a new beta version every day and not to be able to test longer than a lousy 20 minutes. So 4.0 is quit new to me.

Hello Halo!

Hmmm. should I keep my Wii or just for Halo3 buy a Xbox360? The tour of John 117 monument is awesome, the graphics stunning but am I a first person shooter gamer enough? I think I like Sam Fisher (Splinter Cell) more.

No gay people in Iran...

While speaking at Columbia University on Friday the president of Iran was asked about the position of gays in Iran. (Remember that at least 4500 gays are murdered by his regime)

His answer: "In Iran, we don’t have homosexuals like in your country. We don’t have that in our country. In Iran, we do not have this phenomenon. I do not know who has told you that we have it,"

I guess he misinterpretated the word "GAY" because as he we all know that the pehenomenon of HAPPY people in Iran is non existing... ;-))

Your not so friendly gym

There is this gym in Salt lake City, Gym Jones, which profiles itself as a sort of fightclub. You cannot become a member, you have to be invited. The gym is very basic and pain seems to be the no. 1 objective. Have a look at their warnings before you sent them a mail inquiring about a membership...

Whoever said, "there are no stupid questions" was wrong. We are not interested in helping beginners, the indolent, or the ignorant. Contacting us implies you have done your utmost to become informed through other avenues and experience. Paradise

Because of my mother her birthday we made a boat trip (with The Paradise) through the Amsterdam channels. It is always great to see Amsterdam from the water and to see my nieces Iris, Renee, Robin and nephew Jeroen.
Oh yes, and my mother liked it as well...

One charging-plug for all phones

What is going on? Cellphone manufacturers getting together and making a decision that makes sense!
Samsung, Motorola, Sony Ericsson, LG, and Nokia have agreed to use micro USB as a charging-plug standard for phones.

Yippee!! If you are like me this will be great news. Every time I
get a new cell phone I tend to buy a number of chargers, so I have
drawers full of redundant chargers.

For the cynic there is one small cloud - the mini USB chargers, that
so nearly became the standard will need replacing, signaling one last
chance to make a chunk of profit. And... what about my Blackberry??

Via [Gizmodo]

'Don’t Tase me bro!'

A very disturbing post on youtube of a lecture of John Kerry at The University of Florida. Andrew Meyer asked some questions school officials didn't like. He was brutally  dragged away from the microphone, cuffed and tasered with thousand of volts.

Mr Kerry has criticized the arrest of Mr Meyer, suggesting that he could have
dealt with the heckler himself.

"In 37 years of public appearances, through wars, protests and highly
emotional events, I have never had a dialogue end this way. I believe I
could have handled the situation without interruption,” he said.

The 7 (SEVEN!) police officers are on leave and the whole affair while be investigated. What's next? Ask a question and you are shot?

PS You know what the most horror part of this story is that NOBODY did anything to help this guy. They just let it happen.... :-(

Information needs to be free

Just like water, information will always look for the least resistance and will flow to consumers everywhere, anytime and for free.

The NYT and WSJ will open up their paid sections of their websites and all the other newspapers will have to follow. Advertising will be their new businessmodel (well: what's new anyway?). I think that they have to look for new advertising models the just display or adwords advertising. Firefox extentions like adblock plus (thx!) are washing out all obvious advertising and in the near future every visitor will have such a feature. So what will it be? sponsoring? links? advertorials?

Finally! Dentist and doctor appointments made easy.

The internet is exploding with all kinds of great new websites and concepts: one of those is ZocDoc. They really cracked the appointment hasle. Great interface, just the information you need. Pre selection for insurance purposes, maps, rating: the lot.

I guess that within 3 years we all make appointments with our medical proefssionals this way.

Google powerpoint killer

Losing weight (to) fast...

My new diet and traing scheme is causing me to lose weight probably a little to fast: in the last 4 weeks I lost 5 kilo's.

So now I am only a poorly 87 kilo's. 22 fat %. My original goal was to dive below the 20% mark but I believe that all that I am losing is musscle for which I trained months and months till I dropped...

I will wait till I reached the 85 kilo mark and decide then what to do next...

Marque The Builder

Did the Hard Hat Rijksmuseum tour. It is amazing to see the transformation of the building into its old splendor. It will take until 2010 to restore it and to bring in high tech facilities. But we then have a building with art unparalleled in the world.

Hmmm....

I guess I have to train some more... :-((

E-day and the award

I was the president of the Jury of the first Adobe Eday Award. SNS Bank won the prize with their innovative Live Advise webcam mortgage services. Unfortunately the organisation of the award was very last minute - read: literally last minute... :-))

Simple pleasure

Today the Hans van Manen festval started with an excellent program among which the amazing ballet "Simple Things" performed by The NDT. This is a fluid, powerfull and gracefull ballet and was performed by the youngest members of The NDT. I cannot wait for the next 4 evenings.

Top Brand?

Now, I don't think the folks that hand out the Top Brand designation, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine, are trying to push a Nazi agenda. Odds are they have no idea of the similarity. But given that the award is supposed to strengthen Chinese brands for promotion at home and abroad, they might want to rethink their imagery. I can only guess what the folks strolling a showroom floor in Europe or North America will think if they see an S.S. slapped on the side of a washing machine....

Not so smart phone!

This must be the worst phone ever in the entire galaxy.
Its battery life sucks (approximately 6 hours with bluetooth) / Its bluetooth connection with the Prius is hardly existing. / The navigation is terrible - just try to find your call log / when opening the photo gallery or music folder it will take ages and ages for them to initiate / call quality is so-so and worst of all the laughable one-bridge sync function which keeps resetting itself time after time.
Luckily is is only the phone of De Telegraaf and can I make my private phones (and mail and sms and EVERYTHING (!) with my good old BlackBerry...

And the winner is...

Hmmm...

OK: last funda post (ever)

Emerce today:

Converted!

The Volkskrant of today: Funda opens up for all listings

voorhand was voorgespiegeld.

The day that I am pronounced smarter then anyone else... ;-)

The NRC Handelsblad of today

Minder bezoekers betekende minder advertentie -inkomsten. Maarde NVM-makelaars bleven in exclusiviteit geloven.

Usquert

Today I was in Usquert -one of the most northern villages in east of The Netherlands to visit my friend and colleague Ben and his parent. It was a very nice visit in their beautiful home stacked with art and antiques. Ben is a smart guy and am always impressed of his enthusiasm and his plans.

Photoshop CS3 and the lost serial numbers

I am trying to buy the upgrade for PS CS3. Unfortunately I switch platforms and according to the customer service upgrading to CS3 is then only possible with their help. The consequence is that I have to produce to original Photoshop 7.0 disks or serial numbers... I started working with PS about 5 years ago and 3 PC's ago. So the disks and the numbers are all gone and forgotten. Fleur from customers services has only one option left: buy a new full license at the extra costs of a whopping 1000 euro.... :-(

The end of magazines as we know it

Got an email of my favorite The NewYorker today: would I be interested in receiving the magazine digitally from now on? After Mac World and Photoshopuser, this would be my third digital publication.
Is this a new rage among US publishers? Saving distribution costs? Anyway I like the computermags to be digital, because I can use the links straight of the pages and it is something I would read in my office anyhow. But my The NewYorker is consumed in bed, just before going to sleep. How am I suppossed to read it then: on my macbook? I guess we have to wait for the next e-reader generation and
hope we still are able to receive old fashioned paper for now.

New Scooter

Because of the limited range of my electric scooter I need a (normal) petrol one. These two made the short list...

I am Gay!

I am not Gay!

Thank you for coming out, (ex?) Senator Larry told reporters when he tried to explain why he admitted he tried t have sex with an undercover FBI agent at Miami airport. He said: I am not gay - which doesn't really matter because straight guys to can have gay sex now and a while.
In the mean time I have applied to become an undercover agent - it must be the best job in the world. But I guess I am to late because even those who invented such a thing must by now understand that they might have better things to do...

Are your jeans sagging? Go directly to jail!

Sagging pants are becoming a criminal offense in a growing number of communities in the USA. Starting in Louisiana, an intensifying push by lawmakers has determined pants worn low enough to expose underwear poses a threat to the public. It subject offenders to a fine (as much as $150 plus court costs) or jail time (up to 15 days).

Next: Death penalty for women who wear leggings? :-)

Sorry Jaap...

Banner Blindness

Jacob Nielsen did a nice eye-tracking research on how people -don't- see (text) banners. As I already thought people don't (want) see any simple display/text advertising!

It couldn't happen anywhere else then in Belgium...

Yesterday a top adviser of the Belgium King, Jean_Luc Dehaene came by to give his opinion about the political crisis the country is in. In his hand he had a secret document with the highlights of his strategy. Naturally a photographer made a quick shot of this and now we all know what he told the king... :-) (which is by the way completely boring and not important...)

See all your favorite movies before they premiere for free...

VideoHybrid is a sort of search engine for video's but with a little twist. Here you can find the new Jason Bourne, Rush Hour 3 etc before they appear in the cinema, The quality isn't always that great, but hey: it is for free!

Every day Eddie and I are in the middle of a fight...

With new latest volume of the Hans Warrens' secret diary Eddie and I both can read at the same time in a Warren diary. Unfortunately in the beginning 90's he and his lover Mario had fight after fight about...nothing!
Luckily Eddie and I are reading about something we have no first hand experience of what so ever... -)
New: now you can search in a couple of Warrens' books.

Abdellah Taia

Finally the last novel of Abdellah Taia is translated in Dutch so that normal mortal souls like me are able to read it. My French is such that I lose all subtle details. Brotherly Love is a great book withi ntense storytelling about how it is to grow up as gay boy in a huge Moroccan family.
